Different Platform, Same Service Maybe...?

We have a variety of streaming platforms where you can binge watch on movies and series as much as you want and when you want and we are so spoilt for choice that you can stop subscription with one streaming platform and join the other. Thank heavens they are no contracts involved. But quite honestly, they may look the same but the services they offer are somewhere somehow different from the other depending on your likes and what works for you, now here are some of the popular streaming platforms in South Africa.

Netflix can be streamed on smartphones, tablet, laptop actually almost any smart phone. There are no ads while watching, 👍, there’s a saving mode, yay and of course you can download series online and watch them offline. Here are the different price plans:

·       R99 – Basic, you can watch on 1 screen at a time

·       R139 – Standard, you can watch on 2 screens at a time

·       R169 – Premium, you can watch on 4 screens at a time.

You can have as many people on one account as you want.

Showmax has a 14 days free trail period but this is not available for Showmax Pro (levels).   The difference between Showmax and Showmax Pro is that Showmax Pro has live sports and does not have a 14 days free trail period, this is due to sports licensing stuff. It’s great on local content but here are the price options and device sign in restrictions:

Showmax – R 99, you can register 5 devices and 2 can watch at the same time

·       Showmax mobile - R49, you can watch on 1 device

·       Showmax Pro - R450 and you can register 5 devices

·       Showmax Pro mobile – R225, you can register one device.

Apple Tv +  only compatible with apple devices and other specified devices. They also offer a 7 days free trial. There's a promo running currently where when you buy any apple device you also receive a 1 year subscription on them provided that you redeem this offer within 90 days of purchase. You either buy or rent movies from as little as R84.99 per month. Users that are subscribed can share their subscription with 5 additional members under one subscription and stream simultaneously. Downside, not compatible with majority of the other devices. There’s renting and buying options, kinda confusing...Movies or series that say rent or buy from the tunes Store are not free. Why? I don't know. But shows that are included in your subscription will have the apple tv+ logo on them and those are mahala.

Amazon Prime is another streaming option with a 7 days free trial. Unlike Showmax and Netflix, it includes sports. This platform allows you to watch simultaneously on 3 screens. They also offer rental and live sports, unlimited photo storage on Amazon Cloud Drive, free ebooks and one day and same- day delivery on select Amazon-stocked products. Basically, if you are with Amazon Prime you get access to much than you signed up for. Amazon offers a rent and purchase on titles that are not included with Prime meaning that you don't have to have an Amazon Prime membership to use Prime Video.

Vodacom in partnership with Amazon Prime is currenting giving its customers a 6 months subscription on them, provided that you are a Vodacom user and you have spent a minimum of R150 over the last 30 days on the Vodacom network. Thereafter you have a subscription fee of R79.99 not bad. Their offers are as follows:

·       $8.99 /month (roughly R133)

·       $12.99/ month (roughly R193)

·       $119 per year (roughly R1 770 annually)

If you take a look at all these streaming platforms, never mind the HD and ultra HD aspects of it. The pricing on these streaming platforms is quite competitive. If you are a sports lover, we know which streaming service you are likely to subscribe to. Also for the average person, it all comes down to the content…Is the content the type of content I enjoy? Is the variety of it to me appetite? Are there other value added services to this particular streaming service? Netflix and Showmax are big in South Africa hence you are most likely to find South African content there, or is it the other way around ?...but still...

The other streaming platforms not mentioned above are really not in the South African market yet, or they are not as big as the 4 above mentioned.
